1.GENERAL CHARACTERIZATION OF THE STUDY PROGRAMME

1.1. Goals and objectives of the study programme

At the present time in Latvia and Latgale region in particular there is an urgent need for professionally qualified and well-prepared specialists who are able to analyse and resolve environmental problems. Theoretical knowledge and practical skills, which are necessary for such tasks, could be acquired during studies of geography and environmental science.

The strategic goal of the academic study programme for Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science is to train intellectually and technically qualified and internationally competitive specialists with comprehensive knowledge in modern environmental science, who can competently answer the needs of Latvia’s society and economy (environmental education, environmental protection and management, biomonitoring, scientific research etc.).

In order to accomplish the strategic goal the following tasks should be carried out within the framework of the study programme:

  • to ensure qualitative and successful acquisition of the study programme

  • to ensure mutual integration of different branches of environmental science, ecology and geography, as well as of theory and practice in the study process

  • to acquaint students with the principal facts, concepts, regularities and knowledge system of environmental science

  • to acquaint students with the diversity and integrity of environment and its basic components, as well as with its evolution and importance for existing of life on the Earth

  • to impart knowledge about the spatial and geographical organization of human society, population, economy and tendencies of it development, as well as about degradation of environment due to economical activities and expanding of civilisation

  • to give insight into the topical contemporary global and local environmental problems related to human economic activities

  • to offer a wide choice of corresponding optimal courses according to the students’ interests

  • to develop and to consolidate practical skills of scientific research during laboratory lessons and field courses

  • to promote cooperation between students and academic staff by involving them in scientific research programmes and realisation of environmental projects financed by EU or Government of Latvia

  • to strengthen cooperation between DU and communities’ governmental institutions of Latgale region

  • to ensure possibilities to acquire practical skills in work with modern newest scientific equipment and environment-orientated information technologies

  • to improve and to supplement the scientific, informational and technical base of the study programme

  • to involve qualified specialists from DU, LU and other Latvian higher schools and foreign scientific research and educational institutions in the implementation of the programme

1.2. Management and organization of the study programme

The study process is organized according to Satversme (Constitution) of Daugavpils University, Law on Higher Educational Establishments and other normative documents which are legally in power in the Republic of Latvia, as well as in accordance with study regulatory documents adopted by the DU Senate; enrolment takes place in accordance with the DU Rules of Enrolment, which every year are confirmed by the DU Senate.

Board of Nature Sciences and Mathematics Faculty, Department of Biology and Department of Geography carry out management of the study programme. Realization of study programme at Daugavpils University Nature Sciences and Mathematics Faculty takes place through day department studies. DU Study Council manage and supervise the study process in general, realization of the study process and its goal and aims belongs to The Faculty Board and departments.

Analysis and evaluation of the programme effectiveness and quality are carried out by responsible departments and in co-operation with the Board of Faculty of Nature Sciences and Mathematics. DU Study Council provides supervision of evaluation process. The effectiveness of the programme and its quality is also evaluated by the results obtained at the students’ questionnaire.

The goal of management and evaluation process is to guarantee accordance of study programme’s content to the existing and perspective demands of Latvia’s and EU economy (environmental education, environmental protection and management, biomonitoring, scientific research etc.). 1.3. Duration of the study process

The study programme for Bachelor degree in Environmental Science is designed for a four - year study course (Fig.2). Students have to study 8 semesters (2 semesters every year, the 1st semester lasts 20 weeks from September to January, the 2nd semester lasts 20 weeks from February to June). At the end of every semester students take exams and tests during the examination period (2 or 3 weeks). The study programme (after 4 years studies) concludes with a final examination in Environmental science and Geography, and students have to work out and to defend the B.sci. Degree paper. The study programme lasts 6 years in case students choose professional study programme “Teacher of Geography“ or “Planning of tourism and regional development” and having acquired it after graduating of academic programme.

1.4. Academic status of the study programme

Students, who have successfully acquired the study programme, defended B.sci. degree paper and passed final examinations, obtain B.sci. degree in Environmental Science. Students, who have completed the academic study programme in Environmental Science, have the right to continue academic education at Latvia University and other M.sci. Degree Studies Courses in Latvia and abroad in order to obtain academic degree for Master degree in Environmental Science or Master degree in Environmental Management (Fig.1).

1.5. Employability of graduates of the study programme

Graduates of the study programme in Environmental Science have the right to go into service at several non-governmental and governmental institutions of different level, mainly at different branches of the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Latvia – e.g. Department of Nature Protection, Department of Environmental Protection etc., as well as in institutions supervised by the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Latvia – e.g. Regional Environmental Boards, Nature Protection Board, Teici National Park, Gauja National Park, North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve etc.

Graduates, who have successfully acquired the study programme in Environmental Science and would like to advance their employability, have opportunity to choose and to acquire one of the following professional study programmes “Teacher of Geography “ or “Planning of tourism and regional development” after academic studies during the 9th, 10th 11th and 12th semesters. In this case duration of the study process is 6 years (Fig.2).

Graduates, who have successfully acquired the study programmes mentioned above and passed final examinations, obtain the qualification according to chosen programme and receive the certificate of higher professional education.

Graduates of the study programme “Teacher of Geography “ have the right to work at secondary schools as teachers of geography and to continue studies at Master Course of any higher educational establishments in pedagogic or geography sub-branch “Didactics of Geography” in order to obtain an academic degree “Master of pedagogic in geography”, as well as to continue studies at Master Course in order to obtain academic degree “Master of Nature Sciences in Environmental Science” or “Master of Nature Sciences in Environmental Management” (Fig.1).

Graduates of the study programme “Planning of tourism and regional development“ have the right to go into service at several non-governmental and governmental institutions of different level (i.e. rural and regional municipalities, different branches of the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Latvia or the Ministry of Regional Development and Local Governments of the Republic of Latvia, as well as in institutions supervised by these Ministries) and private structures as planners and managers in planning and regional development departments or tourism managers and organizers. They also have the right to continue studies at Master Course of any higher educational establishments in Latvia and abroad in order to obtain academic degree “Master of Nature Sciences in Environmental Science” or “Master of Nature Sciences in Environmental Management” (Fig.1).

1.6. Implementation of the study programme

Full-time studies take place at Daugavpils University Nature Sciences and Mathematics Faculty using the financing of the state budget or study fees paid by physical or juridical persons.

LES OF ENROLMENT

Matriculation at the Faculty of Nature Sciences and Mathematics is carried out in accordance with the DU enrolment regulations. The DU Senate confirms the enrolment regulations every year. According to the regulations applicants are enrolled regardless of their sex, nationality, race, social or financial status, religion or political views.

The academic study programme in Environmental Science enrols applicants who have graduated from secondary school and have acquired fundamentals of biology and geography.
